Welcoming Mr. Seguin
Mr. Seguin is one of the newest additions to the English Department, bringing his passion for literature into the RC campus.
Teaching is a path that came naturally to Mr. Seguin, as he comes from a family deeply involved in education. Having an English teacher mom and aunts and uncles who are international teachers, he was exposed to the profession very early on. He credits these early influences and the "generosity and kindness" of his mentors as the core reason he decided to pursue teaching. Having grown up in international schools, he says he feels most comfortable in communities that are diverse. His appreciation for multiculturalism and the focus on fostering a global citizen perspective are what ultimately drove him to teach at Robert College.
At university, Mr. Seguin pursued a double major in English Literature and Classics, concentrating on creative writing, poetry, and the study of ancient Greek. This interest in the literary world quickly led to professional experience outside the classroom. Before dedicating himself fully to teaching, he gained valuable insight into the publishing industry by working at two highly respected literary journals. He served as an associate at the Kenyon Review and as an intern at the prestigious Paris Review, where his responsibilities included assisting with reading submissions and helping to organize summer writing workshops.
Mr. Seguin's career has taken him across the globe, as he previously lived and taught in Abu Dhabi and Jordan. He mentions the decision to move to Turkey was motivated by a desire to reconnect with his roots as an international educator and seek a change from the "suffocated" feeling he had experienced while teaching in the U.S.
Regarding his initial impression of RC, Mr. Seguin found the faculty to be "really wonderful." The main surprise to him was the intense pace of the school; coming from an experimental, arts-focused school in Vermont, he was struck by "just how little time everyone has for things like breathing," noting the schedule is "super hectic." Regardless however, he has found the experience of teaching at RC to be very positive so far.
Outside of school, Mr. Seguin's "great love", as he calls it, is poetry, and he tries to make time for writing whenever he can. He also enjoys visiting museums and art spaces and attending music events. While he doesn't have any pets, he shares that Mr. Ringwald is currently trying to persuade him to adopt a cat!
The Robert College community is fortunate enough to welcome Mr. Seguin to the English Department, and students can look forward to learning from his experience and insights throughout the year.
